In March 2026, Das SPEZIAL, The Sound Sanctuary and Arts University Bournemouth came together to explore a simple idea: what happens when sound becomes the starting point for creating art?
The project brought together musicians, dancers and Fine Art students for an afternoon of collaborative practice inside AUB's Drawing Studio. Rather than working towards a performance or exhibition, the session was designed as an open exploration, allowing each discipline to influence the others in real time.
Das Spezial performed a series of sound and frequency-based compositions while dancers responded through movement. Around them, Fine Art students observed the evolving performances, translating gesture, rhythm and emotion into drawing and painting. As the afternoon unfolded, each creative response became part of an ongoing exchange between sound, movement and visual expression.
There was no choreography, no prescribed outcome and no expectation that one discipline would lead another. The emphasis was on listening, observing and responding. Ideas developed organically as participants reacted to what was happening around them, often discovering unexpected connections between practices that are usually explored independently.
For Sound Sanctuary, the collaboration formed part of an ongoing programme of research examining how sound, vibration and music can influence creativity, emotional wellbeing and human connection.
The Drawing Studio offered an ideal environment for the project. Designed as a space for observation, experimentation and making, it encouraged participants to work without distraction or expectation, allowing the process itself to become the focus.
